Michael Waysmith

“Glass; a wonderfully unique medium with limitless abilities to be colored, shaped and bent to reflect the passing light in the most spectacular ways imaginable.” As seen from his creatively artistic view of glass, Michael Waysmith is intrigued by the infinite possibilities that exist with using color and pattern via Cane and Murrine. From this “Intrigue”, Michael creates, molds and constructs one of a kind pieces of artwork that can be described as breathtaking and exhilarating.

Michael worked in the Information Technology Industry for many years before finally realizing his true calling as a glass artist. After receiving his degree in Glass Production and Design from the Wanganui Glass School (WGS), Michael dedicated his life to become what he is today, a world-renowned glass artist.

Although the majority of his days are focused on his artwork, Michael finds it important to carve out free time to teach local glass making workshops to emerging artists in order to perfect their skills.

The motivation behind Michael’s artwork is the joy he derives in creating new and unique masterpieces. In Michael’s words, “My work is a documentation of my exploration of glass as well as my attempt to make beautiful music along the way. I like the analogy with music: The spectrum is like an octave, and colors are like musical notes. When consciously arranged in a harmonious composition, beautiful music for the eyes can arise in glass via the interplay of light with pattern, color and form.”

If you were to travel to the beautiful city of Wanganui, in the lower North Island of New Zealand, you would have the most remarkable opportunity to experience Michael’s process of consciously expanding complex yet intricate patterns from two-dimensions, into a three-dimensional blown masterpiece.
